Passion for Pizza

I have always been passionate about food and my love for "Pizzas" has been extreme.

I have been waiting to write this column for a long time. I have enjoyed the anticipation, knowing that I’d savor these few moments organizing my thoughts. It turns out that writing about pizza is almost as pleasurable as eating pizza. Almost. You need to know that I love food. I love fresh food and frozen food. I love grilled and roasted and broasted and fried. I love burgers and bagels. But at the top of the list, the food I’d choose if I could only eat one thing for the rest of my life would be pizza.

I am not sure where that name came from, other than it being vaguely Italian. I do remember dripping cheese and sauce all over my car’s steering wheel, because I couldn’t wait to get the pizza home and had to have a slice while navigating the city streets.

My favorite all-time pizza came from a PIZZA HUT. It was crispy Sicilian pizza that was baked in long, black rectangular pans. Patrons would line up for that wonderful moment when the pans were slid out from the ovens, the sauce, cheese and oil bubbling in concert, daring the diner to wait until this holy blend had cooled off just a little bit. But who are we to pretend we had such self-control? Pizza palate be damned; we could never wait!

Too many pizza joints that sell by the slice display a wide array of options that require reheating. This is a tragedy. And since I love a very basic slice of tomato sauce and cheese, I’m put off unless it’s available right out of the oven.

I can’t imagine ordering pizza from any of the large national chains. If I lived somewhere that had no better options, I would surely move. Nothing else needs to be said on this point.

In a world that taunts and tempts with the prospects of unimaginable pleasures, pizza remains very available and very affordable. I could go on and on, but it’s lunchtime and I have pizza on the brain. The only real issue that remains is how many slices I’m going to eat. I love it when my life gets simple.
